Read the soil test before you buy a single bag
A soil health card costs almost nothing and routinely changes what a farmer should spend on inputs. Most cards are filed unread because nobody explains the six lines that matter.
The soil health card is the cheapest agronomy money can buy, and the least used. The card comes back, gets put in a folder, and the same fertiliser schedule as last year goes into the ground. Here is how to read the six lines that actually change a decision.
Sample properly or the soil health card is worthless
A card is only as good as the sample. Walk the field in a zigzag and take fifteen cores from the top 15 cm, avoiding bunds, the shade of trees, old manure heaps and anywhere near the field entrance. Mix the cores in a clean bucket, quarter the pile, keep opposite quarters, mix again, and send about half a kilogram.
Sample after harvest and before any fertiliser goes on. Sampling three weeks after a urea application tells you about the urea, not the soil.
pH — the line that governs everything else
Nutrients can be present and still unavailable if pH is wrong. Between 6.5 and 7.5 almost everything is accessible. Below 5.5, phosphorus locks up with iron and aluminium and applied DAP largely goes to waste. Above 8.5, iron and zinc become unavailable and you will see interveinal yellowing in young leaves no matter how much you feed.
Correcting pH is slow and worth starting early. Acid soils take agricultural lime, worked in months before sowing. Alkaline and sodic soils take gypsum, and the requirement depends on the exchangeable sodium percentage, not on pH alone.
Organic carbon — the number to watch across years
Most Indian cards report organic carbon below 0.5%, which is classed as low. This single figure drives water-holding capacity, structure, microbial activity and how much of your applied nitrogen the soil can hold rather than lose.
It moves slowly. A rise from 0.4% to 0.6% over four years of compost and residue incorporation is a genuine result, and it will show as fewer irrigations needed in a dry spell.
Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium
Available nitrogen on the card is a snapshot and moves with rainfall and temperature — treat it as a guide, not gospel. Phosphorus and potassium are more stable and more useful.
The common finding on land that has had years of urea and DAP is: nitrogen low, phosphorus high or very high, potassium medium. If your card says phosphorus is high, cutting DAP for a season costs nothing in yield and saves real money. Very few farmers act on this line.
Micronutrients
Zinc deficiency is widespread in rice-wheat systems, boron in oilseeds and pulses, iron in calcareous soils. These show as specific leaf symptoms and correct cheaply — a zinc sulphate application at 10 kg per acre lasts two to three seasons.
The order to fix things in
- pH, if it is outside 6.0–8.0
- Organic carbon, continuously
- The one macronutrient the card calls low
- Any flagged micronutrient
- Everything else, unchanged
What a soil health card looks like in practice
A card showing pH 8.4, organic carbon 0.38%, nitrogen low, phosphorus high, potassium medium, zinc deficient calls for: gypsum according to a sodicity test, compost every season, nitrogen split across three applications rather than two, no DAP this year, and a single zinc sulphate dose. That is less spent on fertiliser than last year, not more.
Take the card to the block agriculture officer if any line is unclear. Reading it wrong is worse than not reading it.
