Choosing rootstock: the decision you cannot revisit
The scion decides what the fruit tastes like. The rootstock decides whether the tree survives your soil, and how much of your life you spend on a ladder.
Every other orchard decision can be revised. Pruning can be corrected over two seasons. Irrigation can be rebuilt. A variety that does not sell can be top-worked. Rootstock is chosen once, at planting, and stays for the life of the orchard.
Most farmers select on the scion — the variety whose fruit they will sell — and accept whatever rootstock the nursery had in the bed that year. That reverses the order of importance.
What the rootstock controls
- Final tree size, and therefore planting density, ladder work and spray coverage
- Time to first commercial crop — dwarfing stocks bear years earlier
- Tolerance of your specific soil problem — waterlogging, salinity, lime, nematodes
- Resistance to soil-borne disease, which is otherwise untreatable in a perennial
- Anchorage, and whether the orchard needs a trellis
Choose rootstock from the soil, not the catalogue
Dig a pit 1.5 m deep at three points in the block before choosing anything. What you are looking for is a hardpan, a lime layer, mottling that indicates a seasonal water table, and where the soil texture changes.
Get a laboratory test for pH, electrical conductivity, free lime and — in old orchard land or after vegetables — a nematode count. These four results, not the nursery’s recommendation, should drive the choice.
Mango
Most Indian mango is on seedling polyembryonic rootstock, which gives a large tree and slow bearing. Where the soil is heavy or seasonally waterlogged, Kurukkan tolerates poor drainage better than most. Where salinity is the constraint, 13-1 from Israel handles higher chloride than seedling stock.
Dwarfing in mango is not solved. Vellaikolamban gives some size control on Alphonso. In practice, high-density mango is achieved by pruning management on standard rootstock rather than by the rootstock itself — which means committing to an annual pruning regime for the life of the orchard.
Citrus
Citrus is where rootstock choice is most consequential, because Phytophthora root rot and citrus tristeza virus will find a susceptible stock eventually.

On calcareous soil — common across large parts of the citrus belt — trifoliate will yellow and decline no matter how well it is fed. That is a rootstock incompatibility with the soil, not a nutrition problem, and it cannot be corrected.
Apple
The shift from seedling to clonal dwarfing rootstock is what made high-density apple possible. M9 gives a tree about a third of standard size, bears in the third year, and needs permanent support because its anchorage is poor. MM106 is semi-dwarfing, self-supporting, and susceptible to collar rot in wet ground. MM111 tolerates drought and poor soil and gives a large, late-bearing tree.
Density follows from that choice: M9 supports 1,200–1,500 trees per hectare with a trellis, MM106 around 600, seedling stock 200–250. Each implies a completely different orchard — different capital, different labour, different machinery.
Buying a grafted plant on known rootstock
- Buy only from a nursery that can name the rootstock, not just the variety.
- Check the graft union is clean, healed and 15–20 cm above the soil line. Plant it above soil level, or the scion will root and the rootstock becomes irrelevant.
- Slide the plant out of the bag and look at the roots. Circling roots in a root-bound plant will strangle the tree years later.
- Prefer certified virus-free material for citrus. There is no cure once tristeza is in the block.
- Buy 10% more plants than the layout needs, and keep them in a nursery corner for replacements.
A cheap plant on unknown rootstock is the most expensive thing you can put in an orchard.
