Training a mango canopy for light, not for looks
A closed mango canopy fruits on its outer shell and carries dead wood inside. Opening it up is three cuts a year, made in the right month.
Stand under a mature unpruned mango at noon and look up. If you cannot see sky in patches, the interior of that tree is not producing. Fruit is coming from a shell perhaps a metre thick on the outside, and everything inside is structural wood being fed at the tree’s expense. Mango pruning is what corrects that.
Light interception is the whole argument for canopy management. A leaf below about 30% of full sunlight is a net cost.
The first four years decide the frame
Training a young tree costs a few minutes per tree per year and cannot be substituted later by heavy pruning.
- Year one — let a single leader run to 80–100 cm, then head it back. This forces branching at a workable height.
- Year two — select three or four scaffold branches spaced evenly around the trunk, at wide angles, separated vertically by 20–25 cm. Remove everything else. Narrow crotch angles split under a crop load.
- Year three — allow two or three secondaries on each scaffold. Remove anything growing inward.
- Year four — remove any branch below 75 cm. Low branches complicate every operation for the next thirty years.
Mango pruning timing on a bearing tree
Mango sets flower on shoots that matured in the previous season. Prune at the wrong time and you remove next year’s crop.
The window is immediately after harvest — roughly June to July across most of the Indian belt. This gives the tree time to push a new flush, harden it off, and enter the cool months with mature wood ready to initiate flower. Pruning in September or later removes the flowering wood outright.
Three cuts, in order
- Dead, diseased and crossing wood. This alone opens up more canopy than most farmers expect and costs nothing in yield.
- Water shoots. Vertical shoots from the interior are vegetative, shade the centre and rarely fruit. Cut them flush.
- The centre. Open a channel so light reaches the interior at midday. Remove whole branches rather than tipping many small ones — heading cuts stimulate a dense flush of regrowth exactly where you were trying to create space.
Do not remove more than a quarter of the canopy in one season. A tree that loses more responds with vigorous vegetative growth and no crop.
Bringing back an overgrown orchard
An orchard of ten-metre trees at 10 × 10 m that has closed over is worth rehabilitating rather than replanting, and the method is severe.
Cut the main scaffolds back to 3–4 m from ground level, immediately after harvest. Paint every cut surface with Bordeaux paste. Whitewash the exposed trunk and main branches — sudden sun exposure on bark that has been shaded for twenty years causes sunscald, and this step is routinely skipped.
Expect no crop for two seasons. In year one the tree pushes a mass of shoots from latent buds; thin these to three or four well-placed leaders per scaffold in the following June. From year three, yield typically exceeds the pre-rejuvenation level, on a tree that can be sprayed and harvested from the ground.
Do half the orchard in one year and half in the next, so there is income throughout.
Density and geometry
High-density mango at 5 × 5 m, or ultra-high at 3 × 2 m, only works with committed annual pruning to hold tree size. Plant at high density and skip two years of pruning and you have an unmanageable thicket with a disease problem.
Orient rows north–south where the land allows. It gives both sides of the row a share of direct light through the day, and the difference in fruit colour on the eastern face is visible at harvest.
Sanitation after mango pruning
Sterilise the saw between trees with a bleach solution if there is any dieback in the block. Remove and burn prunings rather than leaving them at the tree line — stem borer and dieback fungus overwinter in them, and a neat heap of infected wood in the orchard is a reservoir for the next season.
