Mixed cropping on rainfed land: why three crops beat one
On land that depends on the monsoon, the goal is not maximum yield. It is a harvest in the year the rain fails — and mixed cropping is how that was solved long before insurance existed.
On irrigated land, a monoculture with a full input package will out-yield mixed cropping. On rainfed land it will not, and the reason has nothing to do with tradition being wise. It has to do with what happens in the year the rain stops in September.
What the old systems were solving for
The baranaja system of the Garhwal hills puts twelve crops in one field. The dryland mixtures of the Deccan combine sorghum, pigeonpea and a minor millet. Neither system maximises yield in a good year. Both guarantee something in a bad one.
The crops in a traditional mixture differ in rooting depth, water demand and maturity date. A short monsoon takes the long-duration component and leaves the short one. A late monsoon does the reverse. Total failure requires several things to go wrong at once, and that is rarer than any single one going wrong.
The agronomy underneath
Three mechanisms do the work, and all three are measurable.
Roots at different depths
Sorghum roots run deep, cowpea stays shallow. They draw from separate reserves rather than competing for the same water. In a drying profile, the shallow crop finishes early on surface moisture while the deep crop keeps pulling from below.
Nitrogen transfer from the legume
A pigeonpea or cowpea component fixes nitrogen, and some of it becomes available to the cereal in the same season through root exudates and nodule turnover. A sorghum-pigeonpea mixture typically needs 20–30% less applied nitrogen than sorghum alone for the same cereal yield.
Canopy structure and soil cover
A tall cereal with a spreading legume beneath it covers the ground faster than either alone. Faster cover means less evaporation from the soil surface, less runoff in a heavy shower and fewer weeds. On sloping rainfed land, the reduction in soil loss is often the largest single benefit.
Measuring whether mixed cropping is working
The land equivalent ratio settles the argument. Take the yield of each crop in the mixture as a fraction of its yield in pure stand, and add the fractions.
Sorghum at 1,200 kg/ha in a mixture against 1,800 kg/ha pure gives 0.67. Pigeonpea at 450 kg/ha against 900 kg/ha pure gives 0.50. The ratio is 1.17 — meaning you would need 1.17 hectares of pure stands to produce what one hectare of mixture produced.
Anything above 1.0 means the mixture is using the land better. Well-designed dryland mixtures run 1.2 to 1.6. A ratio below 1.0 means the components are competing rather than complementing, and the mixture should be changed.

Sow in rows, not broadcast
This is the one change worth making to an inherited mixture. Broadcasting was practical before seed drills, but paired rows give the same insurance with real advantages: you can weed mechanically between rows, harvest the components separately, and place fertiliser where it is wanted.
A 4:2 row arrangement of sorghum and pigeonpea keeps the mixture’s benefits and lets the sorghum be cut without disturbing the pigeonpea, which continues into the post-monsoon period on residual moisture.
Where mixed cropping does not apply
Mixed cropping is a risk-management system. Where irrigation is assured, where mechanised harvest is essential, or where a contract requires a single graded product, a monoculture is the right answer. Choosing the mixture on rainfed land is not sentiment about old ways — it is a correct reading of which risk actually threatens the household.
